Accreditation of Practitioners.

All MECS practitioners within the service need to be General Optical Council registered and hold the appropriate indemnity insurance for the services they offer. They must also hold the relevant adult and child safeguarding level two qualifications.

Accreditation is a two stage process.

Stage One– practitioners must undertake and complete the relevant WOPEC MECS accreditation  modules including the multiple choice questions (either Optometrist or Contact Lens Optician versions)

They then must attend either in person or virtually a Minor Eye Conditions Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). Devon LOC can advise of dates for these exams and provide practitioners with the codes to take part.

Stage Two-once practitioners have successfully completed the OSCE then they need to provide Primary Eyecare Devon with the following documents:

  1. Copy of WOPEC MECS certificate.
  2. Copy of indemnity insurance certificate.
  3. Certificates of completion for both adult and children’s safeguarding.

We can then arrange for a on-boarding session which will explain and go through the MECS scheme in detail and we will set up the practitioner with access to the IT system which is used, to triage, assess and refer patients within the pathway.

Annual revalidation is mandatory for all of PEDs services and this is usually by attendance at a CET/CPD event locally .
